This Small Batch Introduction Is One of the Last Ever Peated Glen Garioch 

OLDMELDRUM, SCOTLAND (September 21, 2011) – It is not every day that the distillery manager at Glen Garioch^®, one of the oldest operating distilleries in all of Scotland since 1797, can say “we can never reproduce this taste again,” but with the small batch release of Glen Garioch 1994 Vintage, that statement is patently true. Prior to 1995, the year this distillery was mothballed, the barley used to make Glen Garioch was dried with peat, which imparted a smoky taste to its whisky. The 1994 Vintage, having rested in North American oak, ex bourbon casks for 17 years, is the last existing batch of this smoky whisky.  When the distillery was re-opened, it no longer used peat, hence its current unpeated house style. 

The 1994 Vintage was hand-picked at the peak of its perfection, bottled at cask strength (53.9% alcohol by volume), non-chill filtered and offered now, for the enjoyment of single malt aficionados around the world. As can be imagined, the quantity of this historical vintage is limited and only 3,000 bottles will reach US shores this October. Whisky fans will find Glen Garioch 1994 Vintage at fine retailers nationwide for a suggested retail price of $109.99. 

Glen Garioch 1994 is only the second limited-edition vintage introduced in the US, the first being Vintage 1991, released in January 2011. More than two centuries ago, the brothers John and Alexander Manson built Glen Garioch distillery in the Scottish town of Oldmeldrum, lured by the crystal clear waters of Percock Hills and the golden barley of the Valley of the Garioch. The distillery peated its own barley then, which gave their whisky a heathery smokiness. This is what Glen Garioch aficionados will find in this special and rare 1994 Vintage.  The distillery was closed in 1995 but was reopened in 1997, to the delight of its fans, just in time to celebrate its 200^th birthday.  In its new incarnation, Glen Garioch stopped floor maltings and established its current, unpeated house style.

Ultimate Beverage Challenge’s second annual Ultimate Spirits Challenge was held on March 1-4, 2011 at Astor Center in New York City. Nearly 600 entries from over one hundred companies were entered, with wide international representation.  Following multiple stages of competitive judging over the course of four days, Ultimate Spirits Challenge Chairman’s Trophy winners were determined based on their aggregate score on the 100-point scale.  Led by Judging Chairman F. Paul Pacult and Assistant Judging Chairman Sean Ludford, judges included Jacques Bezuidenhout, Dale DeGroff, Doug Frost, Robert Plotkin, Julie Reiner, Jack Robertiello, Steve Olson, Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan, David Wondrich and more. 

The San Francisco World Spirits Competition held its 11th annual competition on March 18 -20, 2011. Managed by Anthony Dias Blue, with Master Mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim as director of judging, this year featured a record number of entries with 1106 products from 61 countries. These were all evaluated by 33 of the finest palates from the spirits industry.
